Course Description

This course has been designed to introduce students to the tools, equipment, and technologies used in woodworking and building construction.

Students in this course will complete a series of projects. Projects are designed to introduce students to most of the tools in this workshop. Each project will build upon the skills learned in the previous project, while introducing new skills as well.

Safety is emphasized in this class, and all students must complete a workbook which teaches tool safety. All students will take a series of safety tests, which will cover the use of each tool that will be used. A score of 100% will be required on each safety test in order for the student to use each tool.

Upon completing this course, a student should be able to identify and safely use any of the tools in this shop. The student should also know which tool to use for any particular purpose.

Grading

Formative Assessment

Considered an “assessment for learning,” formative assessment is intended to provide both the student and the teacher with information about the student’s academic progress.  Warm-ups, exit cards, academic practice, think-pair-share activities, discussion diamonds, etc. are some possible examples of formative assessment.  Formative assessments will be assessed and used as learning tools, but they will not be reflected in a student’s final grade. Instead, students will be provided opportunities to understand what they know and are able to do, and will be encouraged to form goals and strategies to exercise habits of self-understanding, diagnosis, and improvement.

Summative Assessment

A summative assessment is an “assessment of learning.” The purpose of a summative assessment is to measure the student’s understanding on the material covered after teaching, formative assessment, feedback, and re-teaching have occurred.  Possible examples include unit tests, benchmarks, essays, projects, presentations, and lab reports.  Summative assessments measure a student’s mastery of a topic and count as part of a student’s final grade.

Late/Missing Work

Requests to submit late work must be submitted in writing providing the reason for the delay on the assignment due date.  At teacher discretion, an alternative date may be decided upon.  Late submission without teacher approval will be subjected to a reduction of grade of 10% for each class meeting an assignment is late.  Late work will not be accepted more than five class meetings after due date.

Student will have two days to make up work missed due to an excused absence per Student Handbook pg. 10.

Enrichment

Occasionally there are academic enrichment opportunities for students.  These enrichment opportunities may be assigned to a student upon completion of all previously assigned classwork.  Students are expected to complete enrichment assignments as directed.

Expectations

Class Materials:

Students will be responsible for having a pencil to write with. You will be expected to keep a pencil in your locker at all times. No pencil will be loaned.

You may NOT use ink pens in the woodshop! If you write on your wood with a pen, the ink will soak into the wood, and so it will not come off. Also, ink will bleed through any finish you put on your project.

Late to Class

Students are expected to arrive to class on time.  Students arriving late without a note will be marked tardy and issued a teacher detention according to school policy.  A TU1 is designated as under 5 minutes after the bell.  TU2 is 5-15 minutes after the bell and a TU3 is more than 15 minutes.  Students leaving and reentering the classroom after the bell are subject to these same guidelines.  Reminder TU2 and TU3 count toward loss of credit per the Student Handbook pg. 11. Students failing to attend a teacher detention will be issued a referral as per school policy.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to complete their own assignments without assistance from others.  This includes work completed in and out of class.  At no time are students to share classwork, either electronically or hard copy.

Students suspected of violation of this policy will be referred to administration.  Students found to have engaged in any information sharing will receive a grade of “0” on the related assignment(s).  This policy applies to both the sender and the receiver.

Sign out of Class:

Students are expected to sign in and out of class after receiving permission from the teacher.  Students who do not adequately or accurately complete the sign out sheet may forfeit the privilege of leaving the room unaccompanied.  Students who stay out of the room too long may be marked TU2 or TU3 in PowerSchool. Reminder TU2 and TU3 contribute toward loss of credit per the Student Handbook pg. 11.  Students will not be permitted to leave the classroom during the first 45 minutes of class.  If a student needs to use the bathroom during this time they will be instructed to use the bathroom in the nurse’s office.

Food and Drink

As per the Student Handbook pg. 15 food is not permitted.  Water in a clear, closed container is permitted in the classroom area only.

Backpacks and Bags:

Backpacks are not permitted in the classroom per the Student Handbook pg. 14

Coats:

No loose coats or loose clothing may be worn in the classroom. Loose clothing can catch on a machine, dragging you into it. This is a safety issue.

Cell Phone/Headphones:

Per Student Handbook pg. 14, cell phones need to remain out of sight.  Headphones are not permitted.

Computer Policy

Students are expected to conduct themselves on the school computers as per the Student Handbook pgs. 12-13.
